Suzuki GSX-8R First Ride Review | Sportsbike Or A Vanilla Motorcycle Wrapped in Wolf's Clothing?
Today I ride the Suzuki GSX-8R and give you my initial impressions of this midsized sportsbike. It's one of the new crop of parallel twin so called "soft" sportsbikes that are all the rage right now and which include the Aprilia RS660, Triumph Daytona 660, and the Yamaha R7. Is the Suzuki GSX-8R right for you? Grab a brew, and watch along as I sample the latest sportbike from Suzuki.

    It make me chuckle a bit when someone says something like "My V-Strom has 40K on it now but it still runs great." OK, so? There are Stroms out there with 100K more miles on them that that that run every bit as well. 40K, 80k, 100k, that's _nothing_ on a 650 V-Strom.

    Otherwise, you can try with a test tube to find out which petrol stations have the lowest octane content or if there is any difference. Perhaps there is an E test kit on Amazon or some other website

  • @Andersljungberg
    @Andersljungberg 9 дней назад

    But what do they recommend for petrol for vintage cars or is there petrol for vintage cars in Canada? here in Europe, the approach is slightly different. eg Sweden and Great Britain, 98 octane is petrol with a very low level of ethanol or none at all. That means up to 5%. Note that in Europe we calculate Octane in a different way than in the USA. 93 octane in the USA is correspond to 98 octane in Sweden

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider 8 дней назад

      Not having owned a vintage car or motorcycle, I'm not sure what they do with the new fuels. I just went to a vintage car show where there were hundreds of running vintage cars so they must have some sort of solution to the problem. I'm assuming there's an additive of some sort. Here you can buy anything up to 94 octane but as you say that is calculated a different way than you do in Europe and the UK. That probably equates to 99 octane in Europe. However, the highest ethanol free petrol that we can buy here is 92 octane or about 97 in Europe, but that will be phased out shortly and everything will be E5 or E10.Thanks for the feedback. cheers.

  • @Andersljungberg
    @Andersljungberg 9 дней назад

    Surely there must be additives that will reduce the biggest disadvantages of ethanol such as reducing or preventing corrosion and lubricating Googla E10 additive if you can also find reviews on those products then it can be good. If it had been E 85, some in Sweden would have said Redlight

  • @Andersljungberg
    @Andersljungberg 9 дней назад

    However, the octane content will be increased if you mix in Ethanol yourself in the petrol. And a little higher oxygen content. Which apparently can have positive effects on Dynotest anyway. Especially if the engine is mapped for the fuel. of course you can buy high-octane Ethanol free fuel and mix it with regular petrol There are companies and websites that sell racing petrol. They should probably also exist in Canada

    Personally, I think the styling on this bike is better than the 900. I feel the 900 misses the mark. The original 650 wasn't a great bike. I feel that this bike would be far better to ride, despite basic components. The engine could be a 4 but the styling, the wheels, instruments and the green paint make it look pretty smart. The green is a very pleasant, eye catching colour scheme, I think. When I got my licence, it was on a 900 Ducati and I once owned a Yamaha 650. After that, a few GSX 1100 variants, so mostly big bikes. I know someone with a near new Z650rs in green, so, I am waiting till he is ready to upgrade, so I can buy it from him😁

    Well said, great first impressions review! Concur with your entire assessment... after test riding twice myself (demo and dealer opportunity to test again). My 2nd test ride I felt some slight vibrations in the handlebars; assume you didn't feel same. I've been impressed with the GSX 8R, and considering a purchase. Honestly, I was fine with my 2018 Vstrom 650 and 2023 Ninja 650 until the 8R came to market. One has to go. Thanks for your insight!

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider 8 дней назад

      Thanks for the feedback. I never felt any tingles in the handlebars at all, just a gentle pulse through the entire bike, although it was very very minor and in my experience can be put down to character: it has two counterbalancers, so I think Suzuki left that in there just to give the bike some soul. It certainly didn't intrude in any way in my riding and I felt it was a positive.But then again I ride a moto guzzi griso and a Suzuki V-Strom 1000 both of which have the same sort of characteristic and I enjoy that. I've had a Suzuki V-Strom, and ridden the Ninja 650. For me the 8R is a natural replacement for the Ninja, but you have to do your thing :-)

    • @Rmachine429
      @Rmachine429 8 дней назад

      @@BlueMarbleRider You are right about character. That may very well be the reason I've had a hard time letting go of both the Ninja and the Vstrom. TST industries has developed aftermarket tune, exhaust and airbox mods that transform that little engine. In the standard factory tune your looking at about 74 HP at the wheel. I test rode a Classic 350 and really loved it. People who worry about the small displacement and low horsepower will probably never get understand the appeal... for me, small bikes bring me back to my early days of riding, the simplicity, the purity, the fun. I found it funny that you mentioned riding your Griso 1200 down to ride the RE 350 as I rode my Hayabusa down to test ride the Classic! If anyone was going to find the small Enfields underpowered, it would have been us! Also, I agree that Doug at Mile Zero is one of the good ones. In today's climate of corporate dealership superstores (I'm looking at you, Victoria), a small "family" store is a real welcome breath of fresh air. Doug deserves every success he achieves.

    I bought the 2014 V-Strom 650 with 69 hp as my very first bike, still not done with my license, but I've tried it (legally) and I'm happy with it. the driving school got the SV650 with a more powerful tuning of 95 hp, but I simply can't say I like it, as it's so low that it's uncomfortable over time. same engine, different tunings, and different style of bike, still, the V-Strom is the clear winner for me getting a license takes time in Norway, or Europe in general, compared to the US, where it seems to be just about a test, and bare minimum stuff to learn. we're at least allowed to train legally on public roads here, with either an instructor, or someone who had their license for 5+ years, and they're at least 25 y/o, so I've trained both with the school/instructor, and family

      Great to hear you're getting your license. The UK is similar to Norway - probably for the best. Here in Canada, you can jump on any bike (yes a Ducati V4S/BMWs1000RR/Kawasaki H2R) and take a round the cones parking lot test. Then you ride for a few weeks with a friend with experience (full license), then take a short road test. Then you are considered a motorcycle rider. It's like putting a kid in canon, shooting them out, and expecting them to fly safely. Yes, agree, while the SV and Vstom share the same motor, they are quite different.

      @@BlueMarbleRider I got my license at monday morning, while it was raining a little. during this week, I've already done like 500 km on my V-Strom, and it's insane how comfortable it is compared to the SV650. I just need a small tank bag for easily accessible stuff, like credit cards and I'm good btw, the US and Norway might have similarities for the test, but we have to do hours of training with an instructor, going thru 3 levels of skill mastering, incl. a 3 hour session on a track for experience, a 6 hour session with an instructor on public roads as a "long trip" experience, and so on. in total, we have to pay about $3k for our license also, we have 3 levels of the license. A1 for 125cc and max 11 kW power, A2 for 35 kW power and max power of 0,2 kW/kg weight of the bike, and A, which is no restriction each level has age restrictions as well, so A1 is 16 y/o, A2 is 18 y/o, and A is a little more complicated, because it is 24 y/o, but we can "upgrade" from A2 after 2 years to A as well, meaning someone who got their A2 when they turned 18, they can upgrade to A when they're turning 20, but as far as I remember, they have to be 21 y/o to actually be fully unrestricted

    Very good review ! Did you try the TDM 900 ? If so what did you think about it compared to this V ? Cheers !

      Yes, I have ridden the Tracer. Different sort of bike for me. I enjoyed both. I found the TDM shield to have the same problem as the vstrom - lots of buffeting. Aftermarket is the way to go. Cheers.

    Very much appreciate your thorough review of all the capabilities of the pack. Only, you didn't include an affiliate link which I'd be happy to click on if you possibly had an account with Revzilla, though I'd use yours for Amazon if you provide it. As I'm going on a trip with friends in the next 2 weeks, I was going to grab one of my Camelback backpacks with 3 litres, but this pack seems far more useful. How is it when loaded down?

      @BlueMarbleRider 18 дней назад

      Mine is still going, and it is well over-loaded. It hasn't failed, despite being abused on the back of dirt bike... My affiliate link is gone, I'm afraid, but thanks for thinking of me. Cheers.
